There are many Rolex 1680s on the market- but every now and then, one comes along that truly stands out. Let me tell you why this one is special. This particular 1680 comes directly from its original owner, who purchased the watch in March 1980 at the renowned jeweller Christ. At that time, Christ was an official Rolex retailer – but they lost their license in 1998, making this purchase part of a now-closed chapter in Rolex retail history. Since the day it was bought, this watch has been worn only on rare and special occasions. It has been meticulously cared for and remains in remarkable condition—so much so that it appears to be unpolished. The preservation is exceptional. Everything that was originally handed over by the jeweller in 1980 is still present today: the box, papers, and even the extra links, carefully stored in the original paper from the store. This isn’t just a Rolex Submariner 1680 – it’s a true time capsule. I’m usually of the opinion that box and papers, while nice, aren’t essential for vintage pieces. But in a case like this – where the watch has had only one owner, remained untouched for decades, and is preserved with such completeness – they elevate the piece to another level entirely. One of the true highlights of this watch is the dial. The lume has aged into a beautiful, creamy tone, and the hands have taken on a slightly darker patina – a subtle but classic detail that collectors love. It’s the kind of dial that tells a story and catches the eye instantly. After over 40 years, this 1680 looks and feels as if it were sold just yesterday. In all my time with vintage watches, this is arguably the finest example of a 1680 I’ve ever seen.
