OMEGA Seamaster Ref. 176.005 “Jedi” NOS
The Omega Seamaster Ref. 176.005, affectionately known as the “Jedi,” is indeed a fascinating piece from the 1970s with a rich backstory. This stunning WRISTCLASSIC in New Old Stock (NOS) condition has become iconic, partly due to the passionate efforts of Chuck Maddox, a renowned watch collector, and Omega enthusiast, who helped popularize its nickname. Interestingly, the “Jedi” nickname became associated with the Ref. 176.005 after a mix-up in a 2007 OmegaMania auction by Antiquorum, where the 145.0024 model was incorrectly called the “Jedi,” while the catalog later referred to the 176.005 as the “so-called Jedi.” This misidentification led to both models being linked to the moniker, though collectors generally regard the 176.005 as the true “Jedi.” The 42mm stainless steel TV-shaped case of this Seamaster, with its bold sunray finishing, gives it a strong presence on the wrist. The dial is beautifully balanced with an Omega logo, clean markers, and two sub-registers, all in pristine condition. This watch is powered by the Lemania-based Omega caliber 1040 (also referred to as Lemania cal. 1340), ensuring reliable chronograph performance and a strong power reserve. This exceptional piece comes on an unworn leather strap with the original Omega stainless steel buckle, completing the ensemble. The Seamaster 176.005 “Jedi” is a rare vintage chronograph that represents a perfect fusion of Omega’s watchmaking heritage and a touch of 1970s flair, making it highly collectible and a true conversation starter.
OMEGA
Omega was founded in 1848 in La Chaux-de-Fonds by Louis Brandt. Out of this small watch manufacture grew a large company: In 1894, the famous 19-ligne pocket watch movement was developed and named “Omega”. Omega, as the final letter of the Greek alphabet, stands for the ultimate level in perfection and quality. In the 1930 the company entered into collaboration with the S.S.I.H. (Société Suisse pour l’Industrie Horlogère). Out of this collaboration the Swatch Group developed. Today, Omega is the flagship of this huge company. In 1932, Omega entered its partnership with the Olympics which continues till today. When in 1969 Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin accomplished the first moon landing there were equipped by Omega with the Speedmaster, and this so-called „Moonwatch“ is still regarded as one of the most significant watches in history.
