ROLEX “Pre-Daytona” Ref. 6238 Chronograph – 1966

The Rolex Reference 6238, often nicknamed the “Pre-Daytona,” stands as one of the most important chronographs in the brand’s history. Produced in the early 1960s, it bridges the gap between the classic chronographs of the 1950s and the legendary Daytona introduced in 1963. This example features the highly sought-after silver dial, beautifully preserved with evenly aged lume that has developed a warm patina over time. The clean, understated design – with its sunburst finish, slim baton markers, and elegant sub-dials – captures the transitional aesthetic that makes the 6238 so iconic. Measuring 36 mm, the stainless steel case retains excellent proportions, offering both presence and comfort on the wrist. Inside beats the manual-wind Valjoux-based caliber 72B, a robust and precise movement that powered many of Rolex’s most celebrated chronographs. Fitted with a tasteful leather strap, this 6238 presents as a refined yet sporty chronograph, embodying both utility and sophistication. Well-preserved and honest, it is a superb example of one of Rolex’s most collectible vintage references – a watch that laid the foundation for the Daytona legend.
